2018 Bardstown Christmas Parade

Bardstown Christmas Parade/Nelson Co. PRIDE Games

This year, Nelson County Schools is heavily involved in the Bardstown Christmas Parade. Similar to the PRIDE Games that was held during the football season, there will be different festivities, chili cook offs, parade float contests, etc. with the goal being to bring together our community and schools. With this collaboration, the Nelson County Board of Education wants the two County School high school bands to come together to form one big marching band for the parade. In the future, the goal is to include the high school band from Bardstown Ind. Schools as well.

In order for this collaboration to be as successful as possible, I have been working with
Mr. Mudd at NCHS.
There are 3 after school rehearsals at NCHS from 3:40 PM-5:30 PM for this event.
The dates for these rehearsals are
Monday 11/19/18, Monday 11/26/18, and Wednesday 11/28/18.
The Christmas parade is Thursday, 12/6/18 at 6:00 PM.
An earlier arrival time for students will be set by Mr. Mudd.

All students are encouraged to attend all 3 after school rehearsals, but attendance
at the Wednesday rehearsal is required, as well as attendance at the parade.

Students will be in full marching band uniform for the parade.
It will be cold, so students may wear gloves in addition to their uniform.

*Transportation will not be provided by TNHS*

THANK YOU

Thank you to everyone who helped make Saturday's fundraisers a success! We raised money for our program and also got out into the community. Here's to future collaborations with our community partners and the continued growth of our program.

We would not be able to do what we do without people like you helping us to be successful.

Thank you.

Fall 2018 Auditions

It's Audition Time

Auditions for chair placements in the TNHS Band will be taking place on Wednesday 9/12/18 and Friday 9/14/18 after school from 3:15 PM - 6:30 PM

A sign-up sheet will be posted in the band room starting on Monday 8/27/18 and will remain up for sign-ups until Friday 8/31/18.

All students in symphonic band MUST audition. Once the sign-up sheet has been taken down, any student who hasn't signed up for a time must speak with Ms. Dykes and be assigned a time.

These auditions will be a grade in IC. Any student who does not audition will receive a 0 for this assignment.

Auditions will be blind (I will not be able to see who is playing), and the requirement are as follows:

  • Scales (have all 12 major scales prepared. I will ask for 2)
  • BOTH All-State audition excerpts

Chair placement will be based on compared student scores based on this rubric

Scale sheets, fingering charts, and audition excerpts have all been passed out in class. If any student was absent and did not receive these, come talk to Ms. Dykes to get the materials you need.

Happy practicing!

Band Camp Info.

When: July 30, 2018 - August 3, 2018

Where: Thomas Nelson High School

Who: All members of the Marching Generals

Good evening! With band camp right around the corner, I have some information for students and parents that is imperative to us having a successful camp. The dates of camp are listed above, and a schedule of each day can be found in the handbook. One of the most important bits of info. about camp this year is that students will not be permitted to leave the school for lunch and dinner. Each student should come to camp each day with enough food for both meals. Do not leave your house without packing your lunchbox. We will be exerting a lot of energy and it is vital that students get enough nourishment to stay healthy.

Along with your meals, make sure to bring the following with you to camp. These materials will ensure that we have a smooth week:
  • Water bottle
  • Close-toed athletic shoes (students who do not adhere to this will be sent home to change shoes)
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Pencils
  • Binder with sheet protectors for music
  • DEODORANT
  • Food

There will be professionals coming in for band camp to work with you all! This is an exciting opportunity and I expect that all students be respectful to our guests and really take in their teaching.

 Eli O'Neil: Drumline

 Kevin Maloney- Front Ensemble

Kristen Daniel: Winds/Hornline

Amanda Alford: Color Guard Choreography

Marching Band Handbook 2018

Marching band season is upon us! The link above will take you to the handbook for this year. There is a student contract and a parent contract at the end of the handbook that must be signed and returned to Ms. Dykes by the end of band camp. Each student will receive a physical copy of the handbook, but the link will always be accessible. If you have any questions about the handbook or it's contents, don't hesitate to contact the director.

Meet the New TNHS Performing Arts Leader!

Ashley Dykes

Hello and welcome to the Thomas Nelson High School Bands Blog! My name is Ms. Dykes, the new Performing Arts Leader. I am very excited to learn and make music with you this year! I am a recent graduate of Morehead State University where I studied Music Education and played French Horn. Before we can really get started, we all have to get to know each other a little better, so here is a little bit of information about me. I was born and raised in Shepherdsville, KY where I still live to this day, I've been to 7 different countries in my lifetime (the Czech Republic was my favorite), and I LOVE dogs. I do have a dog, her name is Winnie and she is one and a half years old!

This blog is where you will come to find all up-to-date information on what is going on with the TNHS Bands. Be sure to check back often so you don't miss anything! Let's get this year off to a great start. I can't wait to meet all of you, and I'll see you at band camp! 😎

GO GENERALS!

Musically Yours,
Ms. Dykes
