CARE Culture

Commitment to the TNHS Band and Performing Arts Department is vital to our success. Commitment to our program looks like a pyramid.

The foundation of our pyramid is PRESENCE, which has three sub-categories: attendance, sacrifice, and discipline. Attendance is required of each student at ALL band events, including band camp, all after-school rehearsals, football games, competitions, concerts, fundraisers-everything. Just like participating in a school sport, every student is expected to be in attendance; no exceptions. Each student is also going to have to make sacrifices to be in our program. Whether it be time or energy, everyone in our program makes sacrifices for the good of the program. With a combined effort from everyone, these sacrifices will be miniscule in comparison to the success that comes from them. The last section of PRESENCE is discipline. Each member of our family must practice discipline daily. In rehearsals, discipline looks like being attentive, respectful, and showing huge amounts of self-control. Being prepared for every rehearsal, concert, or event is another way students are expected to practice discipline. When every student commits to being PRESENT, our program thrives in incredible ways.

The middle portion of our CARE Culture pyramid is TECHNIQUE. Learning to be efficient in rehearsals and at-home practice, keeping instruments and voices in good repair, and continually improving their playing, practice habits, physical and mental health are key instruments in the growth of our program. Once every student commits to improving their technique, our program becomes better each and every day. Improving technique becomes a cycle of students learning something new, getting excited about their improvements, and then continue to dig deeper and expand their knowledge and performance.

Once every student commits to being PRESENT and mastering TECHNIQUE, then QUALITY MUSICIANSHIP is reached. This is a unique portion of our CARE Culture pyramid in that this is both an individual goal and the goal of our program. Individual students reach Quality Musicianship through being Present and continually working on their Technique. Our program reaches Quality Musicianship as each student rises through the levels of our pyramid. Quality Musicianship is a goal that is constantly growing and changing. It doesn't stop with a good concert or solo performance- there are always ways to improve, and our goals get bigger and bigger as the knowledge and talent of our students grows.
